About the software

Description: Parents DetailsThis is herd management software for government other breeding farms whose main focus is breeding superior genetic stock for replacement, embryo production and sale of superior genetic bulls for introduction in breeding programs.  Since the government agencies own several cattle breeding farms it is desirable to network these to central station and the pooled data is made available to various stakeholders including expert breeders, geneticists, herd management specialists and research institutes.   This software therefore is available in stand-alone as well as network mode.  The software can maintain the data of cows and buffaloes and of their different breeds.  The data sorting is possible for different breeds.  Each breeding farm can decide distinct parameters depending upon the current status and there is facility of maintaining data on embryos collected or used in the farm.  Such animals are flagged accordingly for traceability.


There is a distinct module for collecting physical parameters which then cam be used for genetic mating systems.  The data can be imported to GMS software directly indicating bull assignments for sound breeding program.  For each animal genealogical data is generated as the breeding program progresses.  Different kinds of reports can be generated.

 

Modules

Core Modules:

Administrator and Master entry module:  The default values and master entries can be created.  The Administrator can assign access rights and password for the farm staff.

Animal Registration, Details and Data entry:  Herd, lot and animal registration can be undertaken.  The registration process is fast and easy as many common entries can be master defined.  Previous parities and lactation records can be entered. The module also enables easy data entry from multiple levels.  Specific single-purpose data entry option is also provided.  For example for entering milk records of animals a common milk data entry form with ID number of milking animals in the herd / lot Description: Animal Detailscan be generated.  Data entry is also possible from ‘Action Lists’ or from individual animal file.  Lifetime records on breeding, health and production as well as movement to other premises are maintained.  

Embryo registration:  Through this module Embryos produced or purchased can be registered for use.  The geneological records of the calves is produced automatically when born and these can also be traced by surrogate dams.  Herdman-Breeder there is also facility of entering physical data of dams especially crossbreds (Taurus x Zebu) for calculating the genetic levels and with this data the breeding program for stable breed can be developed for individual cow.

Breeding bull calf rearing module:  Since this software is meant for breeders there is a distinct module for maintaining data of bull calves.  The selection of bulls based on early weight gain, health and the progressive performance records of dam can be built in as default.  The breeding bulls along with its relevant records can be exported to the website or other platform.  The genetic disease testing, and other testing data can be built up in individual file along with scanned copies of the testing reports of the laboratory.  Semen evaluation reports can also be maintained.
Description: Action List
Listings and reports: 
The lists of daily action, alarm (under-performing animals), registers and reports can be generated.  The reports could be status or periodic wherein the period of report can be defined.  The daily action list provides details of daily work schedule of the farm which is based on event prediction.  This increases farm efficiency. Health listings provide list of animals due for health management actions, such as, vaccination, deworming and disease testing.  Custom Report is the novel feature of the software wherein using more than 100 variables and the breeding, production, health and other parameters various reports can be generated.  These reports can also be adjusted for various levels of performance indicators.

The reports can also be converted to easily readable graphs.  Milk production of individual animals can be depicted as lactation curve.    

Health Module:  Since the breeder stock has to be free from genetic and infectious diseases and the data should be credible and transparent, a distinct health module is provided.  The data on disease testing, treatment records along with the scanned copies of the laboratory reports can be maintained in the database.

Add-on modules:

Accounts and inventory:  The farm input and output and distribution inventory can be maintained.  List of all the clients from whom material is purchased or product is marketed facilitates inventory and accounts management easy.

Feed formulation, scheduling and economics:  The module provides the feed composition database of commonly used feed and fodder which can be used to formulate cost effective but balanced feed for animals.  Based on the predefined default parameters feeding schedule of individual or groups of animals can be formulated.  The cost of feeding with other variable costs leads to calculation of cost of milk production for the farm as well as individual animal.  This enables deciding culling program of the farm.


Metabolic profiling:

Major and minor metabolic profiling can be done using this module.  Based on the Crompton metabolic profiling test random selection of various categories of animals can be done and the values of chemical parameters can be analysed.

Auto-back up, Change password:  These are usual facilities for the farm management.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Herdman-Cattle / Buffalo Breeding Farm (India case study):
(Average- 60 Indian rupees = one US $)

This is an advanced of our flag-ship software Herdman-Com.  It is specially developed for Universities, research institutes, government cattle breeding farms.  The software supports data management of ART procedures, ET, oestrus synchronization, pedigree tree, traceability of progenies, genetic mating system, etc.


Following are the benefits of the software:

Breeding management:  As per our experience with institutional as well as commercial dairy farms the first and immediate benefit is improvement in fertility.  It is observed that per 100 animals per year there is saving of losses due to improvement in heat detection. 
Even if we consider 20 % improvement for 500 animals say in five cattle breeding farms, this will amount to reduction in 2100 dry days and saving of Rs. 2,10,000 in feeding (@ Rs. 100 per day) and additional milk @ average 5 L per day i.e. 10,000 L which will give additional Rs. 200,000/ (@ Rs. 20 per L).

Feeding and feed formulations:  With use of software it will be possible to calculate balanced ration and feed animals as per production levels on group basis.  This has shown enhance milk production by at least 5%, which means  for 500 animal producing average 8 l milk per day the increase 2000 L will add income of Rs. 40,000/- and saving in feeding cost of around  20 ton a year which will save additional Rs. 300,000/ per year.  Thus with use of e-farm management system in the first year itself will lead to substantial saving for the farm. In addition there are several indirect benefits:

• It will be possible to select superior genetics animals for purpose of breeding with imported or genomic tested bulls – Even if we assume 50 such heifers being produced every year the genetic gain will be immense.

• The farm will be able to generate several performance data of several generations’ hence high pedigree bulls can be selected with tangible records and introduced in states’ breeding program.

• If the farm is having mandate to train vets / para-vets and farmers, the knowledge about scientific system of farming can also be expanded to them.  This will have multiplying effects as this new management system will spread in the state benefitting farmers in general. • Once data is available techniques like ET and ART can be initiated.

• Data of farms with key performance indicators will be available to demonstrate efficiency of the farms to policy makers and audit officials. • In case of state government farms, the genetic benefits accruing to the state because of the cattle breeding farms can be made available to the policy makers in the state, auditors and general public.   

• The networking system will bring in transparency and accountability since the data could be made accessible to researchers and scientists for analysis and evidence based intervention improvement strategies. 
  

Centralized monitoring of the breeding program leads to overall improvement in farm efficiency, novel strategies and understanding of the relevance of production system by sharing data with remote specialists.
