Rajhans Milk - Sangamner Taluka Milk Union, Sangamner, District Ahmednagar
Sangamner Taluka Milk Union (www.rajhansmilk.com)

Ahmednagar in Maharashtra is a major milk producing district.  It has a distinction of large number of private dairies and functional cooperatives.  Sagamner Taluka Milk Union is a block level federation of village level dairy cooperatives.  The farmers predominantly rear crossbred cows fed on alfalfa and maize silage.  The dairy collects more than 0.2 million milk per day for processing.  The veterinary extension division provide services to several thousand farmers through more than 50 AI workers and two full-time veterinary managers.  Most of the animals in the program are unique identified and registered for performance recording.  Rajhans also operates an independent call center to help para-vets and farmers on data management related issues.

Herdman a catalyst in various projects at Rajhans:
The dairy cooperative has been using the Herdman-coop software since last more than 10 years.  In fact Rajhans has been a partner in development of Herdman software as many farmers of the cooperative participated in validating new versions of the software.  The dairy farmers in Rajhans are predominantly small-holders with average 3-4 crossbreds per farmer and an average milk production of around 9.00 kg per day.   The farmers are progressive and receptive to new technologies and ideas because of which although famine-prone and water-deficit, the area has witnessed prosperity due largely to successful dairy farming.   After introduction of Herdman data management system and identification of problems associated with low production and fertility, over last five years programs such as loose housing, earth flooring, calf rearing, silage, straw-ammoniation have been launched successfully.

Basket services to farmers employing Herdman software - From last three years a novel basket preventive veterinary services program is being implemented.  The farmers enter into an agreement with the dairy coop by paying annual service fee and in return the farmers receive assured basket of important services, such as, AI, vaccination, pregnancy tests, fodder cultivation, silage making, data recording and milk recording for one year.  Currently more than 6000 animals are registered in this program.

Once the farmer and the animals are registered the farmers start receiving text SMS in Marathi every day on management actions and problem alerts.  The respective para-vets also receive text SMS for services to be provided each day.  The data is updated from field itself. Many para-vets have been given smart phones and have distinct user name and password to access database of animals under their care. The para-vets also record milk yield once every month.  Rajhans has already gathered huge data over last 10 years which has given insight to manage the services effectively.  From the current year Rajhans has initiated novel conceptof establishing medium size modern dairy farm units with productive animals which would be futher improved genetically by using imported progeny tested / geneomic tested semen.  The dairy cooperative has also started calf rearing program.  Vetware will always be a partner in such initiatives and will provide data support to implement these programs successfully.

According to Mr. Ranjeet Deshumkh, Director of the Rjhans Dairy these achievements were possible because of the data support received from Herdman recording system and the efforts by farmers in  of adopting new programs.

Mr. Ranjeet Deshmukh, Director of the Milk Union:

"It has been proud pleasure for Rajhans Dudh Sangh to be associated with Herdman software system since last more than eight years.  Over the years the software has evolved and has become more user friendly.  We have rolled out a huge project named ‘Herdman Program’ wherein we register farmers for data management services along with yearly veterinary and extension services.  The program is popular with farmers and veterinary staff.  My own animals are registered in this program and I have access to the ‘Administrator’ module from my desktop.  We have recently given smart phone to all our veterinary staff so now they have direct access to their farmers and animals’ data when providing breeding and other services.  The software program is useful and has been running successfully.  I personally feel that with involvement of farmers and para-vets and use of the records of animals we will be able to improve productivity of animals."

Dr. Pawashe:  Dr. Pawashe is an experienced para-veterinarian working with Rajhans Dairy for last twenty years has been an ardent supporter of Herdman data management system.

‘I am using Herdman software since last ten years.  I find the software very user-friendly as it takes just a minute to upload the records.  With alarm reports we have been able to identify problems in animals quite early.  The farmers are very pleased with SMS services.   This has increased my efficiency with enhanced service quality.  Compared to earlier days now I can reach out to larger number of farmers which increases my earning capability.  In my experience if the farmers and para-vets use the software in right spirit it will help the industry, the farmer and service provider’.

Chitale Dairy, Bhilwadi, Taluka Tasgaon, District Sangli

Chitale Dairy is one of the modern and progressive dairies in India.  It has the honour of establishing first computerized buffalo dairy barn in a small village.  The Dairy has a modern milk processing plant and manufactures several products.  Milk is collected from farmers of adjoining areas through milk collection centres.  Chitale provides veterinary and extension services to their farmers through a team of vets and para-vets.  The dairy has well equipped pathology laboratory and diagnostic centres.  Through its Research and Development Division a number of development projects have been implemented.  The farmers of the area are small-hold sugar cane growing farmers and buffalo / cow rearing is a supplemental activity.

Chitlae has been employing modern technologies to enhance productivity in buffaloes and cows.  Through its Frozen Semen Centre Chitale has been able to improve genetics of the animals in the area.  More than five thousand animals have been tagged with RFID and their data is collected periodically.  It has developed novel technique of preparing silage from agriculture industry by-products, bag silage for small-hold farmers, area-specific nutrition program based on metabolic profiling and fertility management programs.  Chitale also offers services of radiology investigations, hematology, biochemical profiling, ELISA based diagnostics investigations and microbiology testing program. (www.chitaledairy.com)

Chitale and Herdman:

Chitale has been an active partner in development of Herdman software.  All the software versions were tested and validated at Chitale farm as well as the small-hold farmers.  In order to facilitate the data management of diary animals Chitale has established data cum call centre which helps the farmers and veterinary staff in capturing data from far off centres.  The farmers and the para-vets receive text SMS in Marathi and use these alerts in day-to-day management of their animals.  The para-vets provide services based on various performance reports generated for animals and farmers.  Regular metabolic profiling and disease testing programs are implemented for benefit of farmers.  Since last ten years more than 6000 animals have been registered in the data management services.  More than 40 para-vets are involved in providing services to these farmers who have also been registered with the system.  This system enables accountability of services to para-vets and the farmers are assured of services in time without even asking for it.  Currently Chitale has launched its ERP software wherein animal data capturing is a component and this data is then imported in Herdman-coop software for data sorting, analysis and generation of reports.

Chitale has also recently launched contractual service scheme for their farmers.  The farmers pay per animal per year registration fees and receive basket of services including data services for one year.  This program has ensured continuity in services, accountability and sustainability.  The farmers are happy that for entire one year all service needs of animals are ensured.

Mr. Vishvas Chitale, Partner Chitale Dairy has been an inspiration in development of Herdman and other software required for the dairy industry.  Chitale Dairy is one of the few dairies which a decade ago realized importance of animal data recording, actively participated in development efforts and have been using the system over years successfully.

Dr. Harish Ingle has been an active partner in implementing Herdman data recording system in the area.  He is a senior veterinarian in charge of the veterinary division.  He proactively encourages farmers to register in the performance recording program and provides inputs to improve the software platform.

‘I have been using Herdman software program for last ten years.  Right from its first version, the software has been improved a lot as per our suggestions.  With use of this system it has become easy for me to ensure quality veterinary services to the farmers.  We also use Herdman desktop version to manage the data of our farm animals in addition to Alpro system.  The advantage with Herdman over Alpro is that data of cow and buffalo can be analysed separately in Herdman and this software has a powerful data sorting and analysis module.  Now we are at a stage where without data management support it will be difficult for us to implement veterinary services programs.  We have become used to this system……

Krushna Dudh – Rajaram Bapu Patil Sahakari Milk Union Islampur – (www.krushnadudh.com)

Krushna Dudh is a well-known milk and milk product brand in Maharashtra and adjoining states.  Rajaram Bapur Patil Cooperative Milk Union is a progressive farmers’ organization committed to dairy farmers of the area.  Krushna Dudh processes more than 3 Lakhs kg milk per day which is collected from around 90,000 farmers of the area.  The farmers although small holders, are open to new ideas and readily adopt newer technologies and practices.

Krushna Dudh provides veterinary and extension services to the farmers through para-vets and vets, who have been trained to take new technologies to the door-step of the farmers.  The Milk Union provides breeding and health services.

Herdman- data services to Krushna farmers:  Krushna has recently launched data management services to the farmers.  In the pilot project around 1500 animals have been unique identified, ear tagged and registered on Herdman-coop platform.  The farmers and para-vets receive daily text SMS on various actions to be taken.  The para-vets are also provided with ‘Alarm Lists’ on animals under their care.  The para-vets and veterinary staff have been trained in preventive investigations to find out cause of under-performance and then effective solutions are implemented.  The impact of the intervention is also assessed routinely.

According to Dr. Dhope the Chief Veterinarian of Krushna, the scheme has started showing results, although it is still time as only one year has passed.  Many teething problems related to registration of animals and data updates were encountered and solved and now he feels that time has to come to roll out to many centres and aim for registering 5000 animals this year.

Krushna’s plan is to take up genetic improvement program in a big way using the performance data and implementing genetic mating system by using imported progeny tested / genomic tested semen in animals that are efficient breeders and moderate producers.  Under his guidance Krushna has also launched calf rearing program, loose housing and silage making which is receiving good response from the farmers.

"After sue diligence and considerations we opted for Herdman softeare for our dairy cooperative.  The main aim was to generate animal data so that evidence based management decisions and planning would be possible.  The system will also enable the veterinary division of the Milk Union show impact of their work in tangible form, which will result in more fund allocation to the division and better services to the farmers.  During the last year we went through lot of teething problems.  But the technical staff of Vetware were always there to support.  We desired different kind of reports for our administration to which Vetware responded positively.  I hope that in next three years we will expand the data management services and see that majority of farmers are covered under the program."

Prabhat Dairy, Srirampur Dist. Ahmednagar: www.prabhatfresh.com

Prabhat Dairy is a well-known name in dairy sector, especially due to practicing of excellence in every field related to dairy.  It is one of the fastest growing dairies in the country which became possible due to faith the participating farmers have reposed on Prabhat.  Every single plan and program is drawn keeping farmers interest as the primary focus.  The Dairy is in Srirampur in Ahmednagar district, the area is recognized as highest milk producing area with equally fierce competition as there are many cooperative and private dairies in the vicinity.
Parbhat, milk, ingredients and products are available in domestic market as well as exported to many countries.  Prabhat takes pride in its quality assurance program as it wants to produce residue-free milk that can be used to prepare product for babies as well as adults.  Traceability issues are therefore taken very seriously.  The farmers in the area predominantly keep crossbred cows but holding is small.  Prabhat organizes on farm veterinary services to the farmers through a team of veterinarians and para-veterinarians (called ‘Pashumitras’).  The focus is on prevention and minimum use of drugs and hormones.

Deployment of Herdman for animal data management:  In 2015 Prabhat decided to include animal’s data management as a component of package of veterinary and extension services.  The idea was to help farmers as well as Pashumitra and veterinarians to improve their reach and quality of services.  Mr. Sarang Nirmal and Vivek Nirmal Chairman and Managing Director of Prabhat Dairy after witnessing the demonstration of the software were convinced of its capabilities.  The project took off in the month of February 2015 and by the end of March 2015 more than 4000 cows were already registered and their data is being updated regularly.  The future plan is to take the numbers to 20,000 during the current year and register majority of animals under Prabhat within three years.

Dr. B. P. Patil, who looks after procurement and extension and is the senior-most veterinarian of Prabhat Dairy has been taking great pains in training para-veterinarians and veterinarians in providing preventive herd medicine services.  The farmers and the para-vets receive text SMS daily on various activities to be performed and the data is updated from the farm itself by using Android phone or by text SMS.

"It is just two months and already the project has created intense interest in farmers, especially because this area is major supplier of pregnant heifers and cows.  They feel that with availability of records, their animals will get better price and satisfaction to the buying farmers.  Prabhat Dairy is excited because the health and drug usage data updated by the para-vets and the vets will give them insight into problems and will also alert farmers the milk collection centre on collection of such milk separately for non-human consumption.  Herdman data management system will help Prabhat Dairy usher in new era of quality traceability and transparency."

Solitaire Dairy – Baradgaon, Taluka Daund, Pune

Solitaire is a privately owned dairy established in 2014 in a remote village near Daund railway station.  The dairy milks around 150 crossbred cows and is rearing 55-60 replacement heifers.  Solitaire Dairy is a privately owned dairy established one year back in a remote rural area Baradgaon near Daund Railway Station.  The dairy has been established on scientific lines with well suited loose housing with earth floor. The animals are fed silage, barley brewery grain waste as the basal feed.  The average milk yield is around 13-15 kg per day.

The farm has been established with producing of superior genetics cows as the major objective hence right from beginning emphasis has been on data recording.  Due to poor internet connectivity in the area, the farm is using offline desktop Herdman software.  The data every week however is updated on the web server physically so that owners who are from Pune can monitor progress online.  The farm generates action and alarm lists on local PC and the management decisions revolves around these reports.  The breeding program has been drawn based on the performance data of cows.  The farm uses semen from genomic proved bulls.  Due to use of data management system fertility program is robust and the key performance indicators are excellent for breeding parameters. The feeding program is based on production level which optimizes cost of production.

Mr. Chakane In charge of breeding and health is very happy with the software program.  He thinks that compared to Excel sheet program he was using earlier, Herdman is very handy as it generates alerts.  Updating of milk production records is another advantage in his opinion which lets him take decision on when a cow is to be mated or AI is to be skipped.  The farm is visited by large number of farmers from the area and Mr. Chakane who is in charge of breeding and production makes it a point to tell them about Herdman and asks even small farmers to get their animals registered.

"I am using Herdman software since last nine months now.  Earlier to this I was using spreadsheet to maintain the fertility data.  Compared to that I find Herdman very powerful as it provides windows to the animals’ performance.  The individual animal data can be retrieved easily and various reports can be generated to understand the farm efficiency.  When other farmers visit the farm I do tell them to adopt data recording and recommend Herdman since they can register with the program easily without the hassle of keeping computer, etc.  The SMS action and alert feature is very handy for the management staff"

Breeding Improvement Program, Department of Animal husbandry, Government of Maharashtra

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Maharashtra based on the report of the Task Force on use of ICT for improving livestock productivity decided to introduce digitalization of breed improvement program of the state government.  The Task Force after due consideration recommended that Herdman software can be used with modifications to suit the state’s requirements.  The Maharashtra Livestock Development Board accepted the report and gave nod to implement animal identification and networking of all the Frozen Semen Centres of the state to develop a state-level grid of semen straws.  In the later stage the department decided to also launch breed improvement program by developing an online system by modifying Herdman-coop software.  The system called BIP was deployed for the state.  The system is slightly different as the data has been made transparent for any farmer to access.  This was done to ensure truthful data in the system.  The farmers and the AI workers were kept in loop by sending text SMS and a dashboard was developed for monitoring of the breeding program of the state.  Maharashtra is probably the first state in the country to launch such a platform and Vetware is happy as it also played key role in modifying Herdman software to satisfy the requirements of the state.

Since it is incentive based program hence the animal registration was based on a predefined criteria and all breeds of cows and buffaloes were included.  Initially more than 100,000 animals were identified and based on their pre-project production performance around 65,000 animals were registered in the system.   The project was launched in all the districts of Maharashtra.  The novelty of the program was that the entire selection process was online and open for any farmer to access.  The registered farmers receive text SMS on breeding and milk records.  The information on animals in estrus is communicated by the farmer as coded SMS which is routed through the server to the concerned AI technician who updates the record in real time.  The pregnancy checks and other breeding activities are based on action and alerts generated by the system.  Farmers are expected to send milk record periodically and official record is captured once in a month.  The project will lead to generation of vital data that will give insight into underlying problems related to low productivity in Indian cows compared to other countries.  This real data will be useful in drawing valid policy initiatives.

For seeing details of the project please visit www.mldb.in and click on ‘BIP’ menu.

National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) – Karnal

NDRI is rightly regarded as Mecca of dairy technology and dairy animal science education and research in the country.  It was a proud moment for Infovet (now Vetware Private Limited) when NDRI decided to deploy Herdman software to network various dairy units.  The intention was to computerize the data recording system so that data can be used by researchers.  NDRI cattle yard is using this software since last six years and never even for a single day there has been failure reported nor any bugs have been reported.  Dr. Mohanty In Charge of the Cattle Yard and the veterinarian who supervises Herdman is all praise for the software and considers it is a complete package.  He never fails to mention about the software capabilities to the trainees and farmer visitors from across the country.  The students of NDRI are using the software in their research program.  One Ph.D. student has used Herdman platform to develop knowledge based decision support system.  Other students have also taken up dissertation related to use of Herdman software.  Validation of Herdman by leading Indian animal scientists is a testimony of the utility of the software.

Govind Dairy, Phaltan (www.govinddairy.com)

Govind Dairy is a private dairy in Phaltan processing more than 2 lakh litre milk every day.  This success is also due to robust veterinary services provided through affiliated team of vets and para-vets who offer farm-door services.  The Dairy is very aggressive in extension programs largely due to dynamic leadership provided by its Veterinarian Dr. Gaikwad.  Dr. Gaikwad is one of those rate vets who keep their eyes and ears open to new technologies and adopt these with innovative modifications to suit to local needs.  Govind Dairy has pioneered implementation of loose housing and silage program in the state which earned several national awards to the dairy.

In early 2015 Govind Dairy agreed to take up data recording program on a pilot basis. Two centres were identified and currently 500 animals have been registered.  The farmers and the para-vets receive text SMS on breeding, production and health activities and accordingly the services are provided.  Dr. Gaikwad is happy with the software.  He believes in taking baby steps and is confident that in future a large number of farmers would enrol in the system.
