QR coded plastic ear tag:

Considering that India is bestowed with very large number of livestock and economically poor farmers would not be able to afford RFID tags we decided to look for alternate technologies to ensure that errors due to transcribing of the identification number are reduced to bare minimum.  We also considered that in India the public veterinarians and para-veterinarians continue to dominate the services hence the data capturing process should have inherent system to avoid funding of data.

We employed QR technology to replace the linear bar code presently included in the visible ear tag since this technology is available free, the scanning is possible with any camera-bearing cell phone and with data plan it is possible to get the scanner connected to the URL maintained in the server.  We adopted this technology to come out with a fool-proof comprehensive system for ensuring that data is transferred from the farm / premises.

How system works: Most of the ear tag printing machines are also equipped with generation of QR code and online printing.  We generate URL for each unique identification number which is communicated to the plastic ear tag manufacturer.  The manufacturer then would supply the tag printed with QR code.

Creating animal information file:  Once the animal is tagged the para-veterinarian should scan the QR code to generate animal registration form.  The details of the animal including the owner details then can be entered in the animal file.  Now the QR code ear tag is set to help update credible new data.

How data is updated? :  When new record is to be updated the para-veterinarian would scan the QR code on the ear tag to open up data entry form along with the identification number of the animal.  He then can enter the data and save to update.  Since the data can be updated only after scanning the code it is assured that the data is being updated from the animal-side.
