Draft Report of the Farmers’ Commission of India: On need to set up animal data recording systems

The National Commission on Farmers headed by renowned agriculture scientist and planner Dr. M. S. Swaminathan in its draft report outlined the problems facing the livestock sector in India.  One of the critical issues identified was low per animal productivity even though substantial public funds have been invested in various genetic improvement programs.  The Commission recognized lack of animal data recording as one of the major factors of slow genetic progress.  The draft report appreciated the work done by the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University in developing data recording system.  The Commission recommended that these systems need to be replicated (Vide – FCR-2006 3.5.7.0 (e).
